For FM broadcast transmission, it’s often advantageous to place the main audio processor at the studios while the final clipper and stereo generator operate at the transmitter site. This includes cases where the STL uses discrete analog or AES audio rather than composite. Coded audio links cause slight audio overshoots, robbing audio loudness from the final transmitted signal. Proper FM clipping is critical to apply after the coded link, and sophisticated stereo signal generation can add 1 dB of loudness without any audio degradation.
