What happens if a bird flies into a plane engine? The event is called a bird strike. Each year, bird strikes cost US airlines an estimated $1.2 billion. Only part of those costs are from actual damage. The rest comes from flight delays and cancellations.

A bird strike can disable a plane's engine. But engines are designed to withstand at least one bird. Plus, pilots can still fly a plane with just one operating engine.

Today, it's nearly impossible to believe the Earth is anything but round. But for most of our history, humans have thought Earth was flat.

The one concept our ancient ancestors were missing was gravity. Gravity's effects are the key to determining whether the Earth is actually flat, or not.

On a sphere, gravity pulls in the same direction everywhere on the surface. But on a disc, gravity changes direction as you move toward the edge.

At the center, you feel a downward pull just like on spherical Earth. But as you move out, gravity starts pulling sideways as well as a downwards.

This would wreak havoc on sports played in different parts of the world. A ball thrown straight up in the air mid-way out, would curve down and backward toward the disc's center. Plus, a ball thrown mid-way out wouldn't go nearly as high or far as a ball thrown up at the edge where gravity's downward pull is practically zero.

But sports are just the beginning. Since plant stems grow opposite to the direction of gravity, an effect called negative gravitropism, you'll see forests grow at an increasingly sharp angle the farther you are from the center.

Continue toward the edge and you feel like you're climbing a hill that's growing steeper with each step as the backward pull of gravity takes over. At Earth’s end, that hill will feel like a 90-degree cliff, pulling you back to the center. But if you could make it over the edge, and stand on the thin outer part of the disc, you'll feel downward pull just like on spherical Earth.

However, living here would be like living in a desert. Gravity's backward effects pull on the oceans too, making it impossible for any water to reach the edge. Instead, sea levels will gradually rise as you travel in, making the world's center an aquatic metropolis.

So, the next time you see an apple fall straight to the ground, thank your lucky stars that Earth is round. Because if it were flat, that apple might actually hit you in the face.

Ocado Technology has developed a robot that aims to recognise and sort over 50,000 unique items from its storage crates.

The robot pick station consists of a suction cup on the end of an articulated arm. The arm is equipped with a pipe running to an air compressor, which is capable of lifting items regardless of their shape, as long as they are within the weight restriction.

Built-in sensors avoid the risk of crushing or damaging during picking. The same technology is also used when placing the picked item into the customer crate to avoid items already packed being crushed by other incoming items.

The system also ensures that the items are only released if they can be placed without protruding from the delivery crate.

Behold! The shapeshifting Deepstaria jellyfish. But it doesn't have tentacles like most jellyfish. Instead, it has what experts call a "bell." Don't be fooled by its tranquil presence. 

This is a predator on the hunt. Its bell is actually a deadly trap. The jellyfish expands its bell. This traps unsuspecting prey inside. Once inside the bell, there's no escape. The jellyfish digests its meal. The nutrients are carried throughout the body. Through a beautiful network of canals on its skin. Deepstaria jellies are common in Antarctic waters.

This is a remote-controlled snow plow. It's called the ATR-Orbiter. It's less than 3 feet tall.

The plow is 3.5 feet long. It's powered by rechargeable batteries, and it has a pulling capacity of 3500kg so it can clear snow with ease.

The remote works up to 150m away, so you could clear your yard from inside the Orbiter is still in the prototype phase, but it might be available soon.
