What happens if a bird flies into a plane engine? The event is called a bird strike. Each year, bird strikes cost US airlines an estimated $1.2 billion. Only part of those costs are from actual damage. The rest comes from flight delays and cancellations.

A bird strike can disable a plane's engine. But engines are designed to withstand at least one bird. Plus, pilots can still fly a plane with just one operating engine.

Today, it's nearly impossible to believe the Earth is anything but round. But for most of our history, humans have thought Earth was flat.

The one concept our ancient ancestors were missing was gravity. Gravity's effects are the key to determining whether the Earth is actually flat, or not.

On a sphere, gravity pulls in the same direction everywhere on the surface. But on a disc, gravity changes direction as you move toward the edge.

At the center, you feel a downward pull just like on spherical Earth. But as you move out, gravity starts pulling sideways as well as a downwards.

This would wreak havoc on sports played in different parts of the world. A ball thrown straight up in the air mid-way out, would curve down and backward toward the disc's center. Plus, a ball thrown mid-way out wouldn't go nearly as high or far as a ball thrown up at the edge where gravity's downward pull is practically zero.

But sports are just the beginning. Since plant stems grow opposite to the direction of gravity, an effect called negative gravitropism, you'll see forests grow at an increasingly sharp angle the farther you are from the center.

Continue toward the edge and you feel like you're climbing a hill that's growing steeper with each step as the backward pull of gravity takes over. At Earth’s end, that hill will feel like a 90-degree cliff, pulling you back to the center. But if you could make it over the edge, and stand on the thin outer part of the disc, you'll feel downward pull just like on spherical Earth.

However, living here would be like living in a desert. Gravity's backward effects pull on the oceans too, making it impossible for any water to reach the edge. Instead, sea levels will gradually rise as you travel in, making the world's center an aquatic metropolis.

So, the next time you see an apple fall straight to the ground, thank your lucky stars that Earth is round. Because if it were flat, that apple might actually hit you in the face.

Mark Manson: I think, if you look at a relationship, I actually think it should be as boring as possible. And that sounds really weird to people but if you think about it, a really happy 80-year-old couple that's been together for 60 years, the reason that they've been together for 60 years, it isn't because they took all these private jets and they had these crazy vacations and "Oh my God, look at their pictures."

It's because that they were able to be boring together. They are able to spend year after year, sitting around the house, talking about the same boring stuff, watching TV, watching movies, cooking dinner, and it went fine. There was nothing exciting, there's nothing blowing up, there's no huge drama, and dishes flying.

It's an important thing for people to understand because I think, especially today, a lot of people — we don't want to be a boring person, like we really want to be interesting people and have interesting lives but the problem is that, that conflicts with what makes a relationship good in a lot of cases. A lot of cases, what makes you an interesting and complex person, makes you a really horrible person to be with romantically. In a strange way, I feel like we need to cultivate more boredom in our lives, like boredom needs to be okay again. It needs to be seen as a good thing and I think it's definitely a good thing for relationships.

Andy Cunningham: I think Steve Jobs fired me about 5 times. I’m Andy Cunningham and I run a marketing consulting company called Cunningham Collective and I've just written a book about positioning, which is a big practice in the marketing field. It's called "Get to Aha!"

The first time Steve fired me was actually probably the most traumatic because I thought it was going to be the last time I would ever work with him and he called me into his office, or into a conference room I should say, and his CFO was sitting there and he looked at me and he said, "I'm going to cut off my contract with you. I think the work you're doing is terrible and we’re just going to stop it right now so that's it, you're fired."

And of course I was taken– you know I was emotional. I was much younger. I didn't cry but I was on the verge of it and I didn't really know what to do so I said, "Okay, well you know you owe me $35,000 and so I’ll arrange you know for you to—" he goes, "I'm not going to pay you that because your work wasn't worth it." And I was just kind of taken aback so I left the room and I called my mentor who is a man named Regis McKenna and Regis said to me, "Well, if you want to get paid by Steve Jobs you’re going to have to have something over him." And I said, "I don't have anything over Steve Jobs, you know that Regis. And he said, "No, you do." And I said, "What is that?" He goes, "In your relationships with the business press." And I said, "Oh I get it."

So I went back and I got in a meeting with Steve because I was friendly with his CFO— she got me a meeting. I walked in there to the meeting, which he took, which was amazing, and I said, "Steve you owe me $35,000. I need that money. I have a start-up company. I need to make payroll and I want you to give me a check for what you owe me." And he said, "I'm not going to do that." And I said, I said, "You have to do that," and he said, "Why?"

And I said, "Well, just so you know Steve I get about 30 or 40 phone calls a week from the business press that we've made relationships over the last couple of years asking me what kind of a guy you are to work with and I currently tell them very nice things." And he wrote me a check immediately and then he hired me back.

Steve got angry with everybody that worked with him. He was very impatient. He had a vision of what it was that you were supposed to be accomplishing and if you didn't do it fast enough or you didn't do it right enough, he definitely got angry. He threw things at people, nothing heavy, but he threw wads of paper at people, swore at people, criticized their clothing. He did all those things. So what it did to certain people is it caused us to push even harder and try to be even better, but for some people it destroyed them. Fortunately for me, I was one of the first types and I am forever grateful to him actually for the experience because now I am so much better at what I do than I would have been without him.

During an interview at Business Insider's IGNITION conference in New York, Snapchat's VP of Content, Nick Bell, walked through all the changes coming up in the app's biggest redesign. Following is a transcript of the video.

Nick Bell: What we’ve really done here is double down on what has made Snapchat great today but simplified it. And I think, you know, you look at it now, there are three screens. As Evan said, you open up the camera, we think that really aids self-expression and it's the kind of blinking cursor of the new mobile age.

On the left-hand side, you have the friend feed and I think what's key here is that the conversation with your best friend was happening on the left-hand side anyway. It’s where you were chatting with your friends but it was slightly awkward because the stories from your friends were appearing on the other side of the camera and therefore you were occasionally missing some of those stories from your best friends. So by creating one page where all of that lives together simplifies it and we think is going to really aid that conversation and the relationship with your friends.

Then on the right-hand side, we now have much more prominent, much more real estate for premium content from our publishers and media partners, which I think is going to be really exciting and is going to aid the discovery of new content for people.

The other thing that it’s done is allowed us to, as Evan said, separate the social from the media because we know the relationship that you have with your friends is very different to the relationship you have with content. And I think what’s happened traditionally with news feeds is those two have been blurred together and the signals that were indicating this content you were seeing was based on your friends.

But what's actually kind of interesting is that although I’ve got great relationships with my friends, my interests are personal to me and not personal to my friend. So just because my friends like skateboarding doesn't mean I like skateboarding. So here, by separating these two aspects out, we think it's a much cleaner solution and we think that actually what's going to happen is we're going to be able to optimize the two experiences. One to focus on relationships and one to focus on interest.
